It's Official: $100 Sony Touch was Pricing Mistake

I was holding out hope that I'd be getting two shiny new Sony PRS-600s for just $100 each after finding them Saturday morning on Borders.com, but I received an email from Borders that confirms it was indeed a pricing error and that the order has been canceled.

On the bright side, they are sending a $25 gift certificate, and I'm already trying to figure out what to spend it on.

It turns out they were supposed to be $100 off, which brings the price to $199. Still a good price, the lowest ever in fact, but it just doesn't quite have the same appeal as a $100.

Here's the email:

It's up and running at this url: http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/ It's still in its infancy and I'm working through re-writing the code for the template right now, (of which I know nothing about and my brain is about to explode) but it should be replacing this one in a few days with a little luck. Thanks to a tip at the Mobileread forums the Sony PRS-900 is on sale at Dell for just $299. They have the wrong picture up, but the rest of the specs check out. That's a great price considering all the features and accessories that it comes with.

My Theory on the $100 Sony Touch at Borders

I've been doing some digging trying to find out why the Sony Touch is selling from Borders.com for just $100, and I've come up with this theory.

#1. On May 7th, Borders announced in this press release that they'll be launching an ebook store and apps powered by Kobo. While the press release states, "As a device-neutral, rich-content provider, Borders will sell the Kobo eReader along with a variety of other eReading devices in Borders stores," I think that Sony may have a problem with this and might not want to sell their Readers at Borders anymore.

It makes sense because Sony Readers use the Sony software that connects to the Sony ebook store, and Sony isn't going to want people to use Borders' new ebook store powered by Kobo Books, and obviously Borders' will be pushing their own store through Kobo over Sony's. And since Kobo's ebooks are in EPUB, they will work on a Sony Reader, just not the firmware.

Look at these two pages I dug up at Borders pushing Sony's ebooks and software. That won't be the case once the Kobo transition takes place.

#2. If you look at the list on Borders.com you'll notice that some of the Sony Readers are no longer listed; there's only the silver 300, and no silver 600.

#3. Borders probably has a huge stock of these 600's left because they're almost always at list price, $299, when most savvy buyers can go to Amazon and get it for $250 without tax.

There are a couple of holes in this theory, one being the fact that the silver 300 is selling for $169. Perhaps they don't have many left so a discount wasn't necessary?

The other hole is that Sony generally pushes the fact that their readers support EPUB ebooks that can be obtained from other sources, but in this case that may be too much having their devices sold from a vendor whom is pushing their own store over Sony's, along with Kobo's software over Sony's.

SONY PRS-600 SELLING FOR $100!

Yeah, you read that title correctly. Someone must have messed up somewhere because the Sony PRS-600 is selling for just $100 from Borders.com with free shipping, and I took the picture to prove it.

I find it hard to believe that this isn't some kind of error.

Update: Placed an order and it seemed to go through fine. After the order it said they'd send a confirmation email of order status in 24-48 hours so I'll update then.

2nd Update: Borders now has both listed at $199, making it look even more like the $100 price was an error. Waiting for confirmation. The mystery deepens.

Cybook Opus on Sale for $179

The 5-inch Cybook Opus is on sale at Amazon.com for $179. The list price is $249 but it usually hovers around $215-$225.

Bookeen recently added several color models and updated the firmware for the Cybook Opus that added improved battery life and a new sleep mode that goes from "zero to reading in 1 second".

The price of the Cybook Opus has dropped in price in Europe at lot recently as well. It's now down in the £172 range at Pixmania and 190 at Amazon.de.

First off, the Samsung E6 is available for pre-order from JR.com for $299.99. I'll post a new page shortly that covers the details of the E6.

Engadget is reporting that the Samsung E60 and E61 are coming to the UK in July, with the E60 costing £299 (yikes!).

The press release over at Engadget reveals some finer details, here's a few:

International iPad Release Updates; More Countries Added

Apple issued a press release today confirming the release of the Apple iPad in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on Friday, May 28, with pre-orders starting on May 10th from the Apple Store.

Additionally, Apple announced 9 more countries to get the iPad's release in July. These 9 countries included: Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore.

The press release said that Apple will announce availability, local pricing, and pre-order plans for these nine additional countries at a later date.

Sony Readers Lowest Prices Ever

Just happened to notice that all three Sony Readers are on sale this week for the lowest prices ever.

The PRS-300 is selling for just $149 from Amazon.com and the PRS-600 is selling for as low as $249. The 7-inch, wireless Daily Edition is also on sale for $349.

Of the 3, the PRS-300 is probably the best deal overall. Under $150 is a huge price point to hit for any ereader.

Update: Just ran a search and found that the PRS-300 is even cheaper at Buy.com at just $139.95 with free shipping.

Kindle For PC Update - Free eBook

Amazon just released an update for the Kindle PC desktop software. New features include adding and editing notes and highlights, adjusting brightness, full-screen view, and changing the background color to white, black, or sepia.

The changes give Kindle for PC pretty much the exact same functionality as the Kindle iPad app, which is reviewed on this page.

Overall, the Kindle for PC app is a decent free ebook reader, with access to the most comprehensive library of ebooks on the planet, and a lot of free ebook titles as well (here's a free ebook by Robin Hobb). Amazon is definitely stepping up their game in recent months to keep up with all the new competition.

Kindle News: New Firmware Coming and Mother's Day Promo

First off, just noticed that Amazon is now offering free 2-day shipping on the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX for Mother's Day, which is on May 9th.

Secondly, Amazon posted the feature improvements of the new upcoming software update for Kindle on their Kindle software page. The update is supposed to be released in May and includes the following improvements:

Nook Best Buy Ad

Now that the Nook officially sells from Best Buy, I noticed while leafing through the newspaper this morning that the Nook is on the first and second page of this week's Best Buy flyer, and it is also the first product advertised on their website's homepage.

The Nook sells for the exact same price as it does from Barnes and Noble, and both have free shipping when ordering online.

It's disappointing that Best Buy is giving the Nook so much advertising but isn't offering any promotional discount or incentive that makes it any better than buying from B&N.

And I really wish Barnes and Noble would stop saying they have over 1 million ebooks in the Nook advertisements; it's more than a little misleading when you subtract all the poorly-formatted public domain titles from Google and other free titles and come up with 135,455 actual ebooks for purchase, which is considerably less than their competitors.

New Nook Firmware Update

Barnes and Noble has released another firmware update for the Nook, version 1.3.

The most notable additions are a web browser and some games like Sudoku and chess, along with improved speed for turning pages and opening ebooks.

They've also added in-store ebook reading, where you can read any ebook while in a Barnes and Noble store for up to an hour, as the fine print seems to indicate.

Target Stores To Sell Amazon Kindle

A couple of weeks before Barnes and Noble officially announced the Nook last year, Amazon casually announced Kindle International, making it available to over 175 countries.

And now that Apple has released the iPad, Amazon is again taking steps to make the Kindle more widely available. First, of course, the new Kindle iPad app. And today it was officially announced that Kindles will be sold from Target stores.

"As the first brick-and-mortar retailer to carry Amazon's Kindle, Target will make Kindle available at its flagship downtown Minneapolis store and 102 south Florida stores beginning April 25, rolling out to more Target stores later this year."

iPad 3G Release Date (US)

Apple issued a press release today announcing that the iPad 3G models will arrive to customers who've pre-ordered them on Friday, April 30th (no special Saturday delivery this time).

The iPad 3G models will also be available from Apple retail stores on the same date at the interesting hour of 5:00 p.m. Good luck to all the Apple employees that have to tell every eager iPad 3G buyer that they have to wait until the clock strikes 5.

The iPad 3G models cost $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB, and a wallet-shredding $829 for 64GB. Data plans cost an additional $14.99 a month for the 250 MB plan, and $29.99 a month for unlimited use.

To 3G or Not To 3G

From my experience, the Apple iPad is severely limited without internet access. A good deal of the apps require internet to work. There are apps for saving web-pages to view offline and other ways to prepare for instances when Wi-Fi isn't available, but if you intend on using the iPad a lot in areas that Wi-Fi isn't available then the 3G model is probably worth the extra $130.

Nook News: New Nooks and Firmware Upcoming

There's some interesting Nook rumors floating around the web. Gizmodo and some other websites are reporting that a Wi-Fi only Nook (dubbed Nook Lite) is coming within the next couple of months that will supposedly sell for just $199.

And there's also supposed to be a Nook 2 sometime later this year that has something to do with "Project Encore"--details are sketchy at this point.

And last but not least, another Nook firmware update is supposedly coming out next week that will include a web browser. Web browsers are pretty lame on E Ink devices, but with the Nook's LCD screen web browsing may be a huge plus. We'll have to wait and see.

Apple iPad International Release Delayed

Apple announced today that the demand for the iPad in the US is more than they anticipated and that the international release of the iPad will be delayed until the end of May. Pre-orders will start on May, 10th.

From the press release:

"Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.
Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reasonthe iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far."

Nook Now Selling From Best Buy

It's official. The Barnes and Noble Nook is now selling from BestBuy.com, and will likely be available from Best Buy stores sometime in the near future.

It's a smart move by B&N to have their product displayed alongside Sony Readers and the iRex DR-800 on Best Buy's shelves. Competition is starting to heat up.

Alex Reader Ships Today

Spring Design issued a press release yesterday announcing that the Alex Reader will start shipping today, April 14th.

At $399 it's hard to see how the Alex will be able to compete with the likes of the big three ereaders: Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle, and B&N Nook. The larger Sony PRS-900 and iRex DR-800 both cost the same price and the comparable Sony 600, Kindle 2, and Nook all cost much less at around $259.

The Alex Reader offers some nifty new features, there's no question about that, but for just $100 more the Apple iPad can do everything from browsing the web to playing HD videos.

Spring Design once announced that the Alex would be sold from Borders for $359, but now there's no mention of that anywhere. One interesting thing from the press release, though, they mentioned that multi-language versions of Alex for countries speaking Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Korean, and Hebrew will be announced soon. And that Alex is the first ereader to offer international versions of the product through local country partners connecting to local bookstores.
