Hanvon eBook Readers

Hanvon is the major ebook reader brand in China, commanding 95% of the ereader market. They shipped about 100,000 units in December 2009, according to their 2010 CES press release, where they announced five new models for the US market (listed below↓).

The new devices aren't available yet, but Hanvon currently has four other models on the international market, two of which are available from Amazon.com and Amazon UK, and another rebranded version, the Elonex 511EB, sells for just £129 from Waterstone's, and it comes with a 4GB MicroSD card.

In addition to the newly-announced US models, Hanvon plans to release several different varieties in 5, 6, 8, and 9.7-inch screens, not to mention they are the OEM of ebook readers with other brand names. With all these options, the hardest part will be trying to decide which of the various models is the right pick.

WISEreader N516

Hanvon N516

The Hanvon N516 is a 5-inch reader that comes in two colors—black and white—and has a pixel resolution of 600 x 800, with 8 levels of gray.

Dimensions: 152mm x 108mm x 12mm; Weight: 170 grams (without cover).

Formats: Adobe EPUB and PDF, TXT, HTXT, HTML, DOC, JPG, PNG, GIF, MP3.

Memory: 512MB internal; SD cards up to 32GB; comes with 2GB SD card.

Additional info: headphone jack, battery lasts 7,000 page-turns, usually comes with a cover, text-to-speech.

The N516 is one of a few ereaders to support OpenInkpot, an open source ebook reader firmware with many customizable features.

The N516 sells for about $230 from Amazon and £170 from Amazon UK.

WISEreader N518

Hanvon N18

The N518 is similar to the N516. The main difference is that this model features a touchscreen for annotating, highlighting, etc.

It also has a unique text recognition feature that can convert freehand writing into digital text.

Display: 5-inch E Ink screen, 600 x 800 resolution, 8 shades of gray.

Dimensions: 153mm x 112mm x 12mm; Weight: 190 grams (without cover).

The N520 and N526 share the same design, the difference being the N526 has a touchscreen.

Both devices have 5-inch screens with the same resolution and gray scale as the other models.
